                                                     Better Now

“Better Now” is the 9th track on “Post Malone’s” 2018 album ‘Beerbongs & Bentleys.  Better now by Post Malone is about a post-break-up situation of a couple. Both of the couples are saying that they regret breaking up with each other but at the same time are trying to convince themselves that they are better off without each other. In the song, there are both perspectives of Malone and his ex-girlfriend but in different words. Despite the song having a sad story behind it has a very catchy tune and an upbeat rhythm Unlike other Artist when rapping about their feelings or a life story their voice would sound sad or depressed and the tune wouldn’t be catchy. The lyrics go with the flow of the beat as Malone voice changes throughout the song from high pitch to low pitch

At the beginning of the song the catchy tune and beat start as it makes you dance and think that this song is lively and party song. As the beats start Malone begins by explaining the suffering because of the break up and starts the song with “You prolly think that you are better now, better now you only say that ’cause I’m not around, not around You know I never meant to let you down, let you down Woulda gave you anything, woulda gave you everything” here he is talking to his ex-girlfriend saying that she thinks she is better and over the break up situation but in reality she is not. He continues and says that he never meant to let her down which means during their relationship he let her down in a situation. He also says he would have given her everything and anything which means during their relationship he didn’t give her everything which he could have because his net worth was around 14 million dollars. This part of the song is repetitive and the endings of the words sound similar and they rhyme. As this repetition continues Malone’s voice sounds bitter as if he is full of regret and sadness.

In the first verse of the song, Malone starts to explain how this breakup was sudden to him and that he didn’t see it coming. In the song, he says” I did not believe that it would end, no Everything came second to the Benzo You’re not even speaking’ to my friends, no You knew all my uncles and my aunts though”. In this verse, Malone was shocked by how his relationship came to an end and he sees it as a “benzo” could be short for Benzodiazepine-a drug used to treat anxiety. Malone probably was addicted to this drug that made the girl not love him anymore. Another word that can come from benzo is short for Mercedes Benz which he loved his car second after his girl but Malone could have easily afforded a Benz which is unlikely for his ex-girlfriend to leave him for a car. After their breakup, Malone’s ex-girlfriend stopped speaking to his friends and family as if they had a part that had led to this breakup. The girl had already known his aunt and uncle which could mean that Malone’s family had treated the girl as if she was part of their family and after the break up their bond with Malone’s girlfriend broke. Malone also reminds himself about the good times that he had with her. In the song he says” Twenty candles, blow ’em out and open your eyes We were looking forward to the rest of our lives Used to keep my picture posted by your bedside Now it’s in your dresser with the socks you don’t like”. Malone reminds himself about the time of his girls twentieth birthday and their dream and wish were to stay on together forever. However, this dream came to an end and now she loathes him. Malone’s ex-girlfriend used to keep his picture up next to her bed and now its in the dresser with the socks she doesn’t like which means that when she loved him his picture was next to her bed so when she sleeps he would be their but after their break up she compares him to a sock that she doesn’t like which how she despises him. The song continues and Malone tries to forget about the relationship and the break-up situation as he drinks Henny but he can’t get it out of his head which shows he regrets what he did that he can’t stop thinking about it. He then repeats the chorus again and this repetition shows that’s it’s not just any type of regret its a deep and depressing type of regret that is making him feel sad and blue.

The second verse Malone talks about his girl’s life after their breakup. In the song, he starts by saying” I seen you with your other dude He seemed like he was pretty cool I was so broken over you” this shows that after their breakup Malone still kept eye on his ex-girlfriend instead of trying to move on. He talks about her new boyfriend sarcastically saying that he seemed like he was pretty cool but in reality, he is saying that she moved on to a worse guy and know that he was only meant for her. It seemed that he was jealous and wanted his ex to come back to him but since now she got a new boyfriend he is trying to act differently and view her different but he can’t because he is heartbroken over her. In the bridge he says” I promise I swear to you, I’ll be okay You’re only the love of my life (Love of my life)”. I these lines he tries to convince himself and tell his ex that he is better and he will be okay regardless of the breakup and that he won’t love anyone else and that she will be the only love of his life. The chorus repeats just to remind his ex that he regrets what he did and that he is sorry but at the same time their better off without each other.

Throughout the song, we understand Malone message to his ex-girlfriend and his regret and sadness through the lyrics and the beat. Malone explains the effects of the break up it that had on him and how he is trying to forget about this breakup situation that has affected him and the girl emotions. But in the end they both convince themselves that they will be better off without each other despite their better and good old days.
